Who is a Manufacturing Engineer?
A manufacturing engineer is basically an engineer who has the ability to turn an abstract design into a concrete one with the highest quality, fastest and lowest cost. A manufacturing engineer can take part in all stages of a product from its design until it is produced. The knowledge and skills expected of a manufacturing engineer are as follows:
The ability to apply the principles of basic and engineering sciences to solve manufacturing problems,
The ability to design, execute manufacturing systems and analyze and interpret the results,
The ability to select and design manufacturing processes and systems using current methods, tools and technologies,
The ability to work and lead in multi-disciplinary projects,
The ability to identify, present, formulate and solve manufacturing engineering problems,
The ability to communicate verbally and in writing in Turkish and English,
The ability to use modern engineering methods such as computer software in engineering design and analysis and contemporary methods in accessing information. The basic functions that Manufacturing Engineers with these skills can actively take responsibility for are as follows:
Manufacturing Methods and Materials Knowledge: Evaluating the behavior and properties of materials that affect manufacturing methods and change at the same time.
Process, Assembly and Product Engineering: Selection and design of products and equipment, tools and environmental conditions required for manufacturing.
Manufacturing Systems Design: Performing analysis, synthesis and controls of manufacturing processes with statistical, mathematical methods; simulation and information technologies.
Competitive Manufacturing: Developing competitive manufacturing methods with manufacturing planning, strategy and control methods.
Laboratory Studies: Measurement and evaluation of variables in manufacturing processes in a laboratory environment.
Manufacturing engineers who can design and implement these processes are needed in many sectors in order for the manufacturing sector in our country to reach the desired level. Manufacturing engineers can work in product development, quality control and production departments in addition to the design and implementation of manufacturing systems. Manufacturing engineers can take responsibility in the management of all manufacturing departments or at management levels.
In which sectors are there job opportunities for Manufacturing Engineers?
A Manufacturing Engineer can work in any field that involves manufacturing. Among the potential work areas of Manufacturing Engineers, it is possible to list many sectors that involve manufacturing, primarily automotive, aircraft, white goods, agriculture or general machinery manufacturing sector, electronic materials and iron and steel. The fact that the sectors they can work in are so wide and their extensive knowledge about manufacturing processes opens up a wide range of job opportunities for manufacturing engineers in a wide area from design to final product. Manufacturing Engineers will play important roles in increasing productivity and increasing Türkiye's manufacturing competitiveness by developing better design, manufacturing and assembly methods, quality control processes, automation systems and manufacturing methods.
What is the Position of Manufacturing Engineering in the World?
Although it is new in Türkiye, Manufacturing Engineering education is widely provided in universities in America and Europe under the name of "Department of Manufacturing Engineering".
Some of the universities in England that have a "Manufacturing Engineering" department are as follows:
